The old guy at my shop in Tulsa told me my fades looked like a bad lawn, so I changed one thing
I had been cutting for about 4 years and thought my fades were solid. Then this barber named Walt, who has been cutting hair since 1987, watched me do a skin fade on a walk-in and said, "You're fighting the head shape instead of following it." He said I was going straight up with the clipper when I should have been fanning out at the curve of the skull. I tried it on the next three guys and the blend was way smoother, no harsh line at the transition. It took me about 2 weeks to stop going back to my old habit. The biggest change was slowing down on that curve and using the corner of the blade more instead of the flat side. Walt said the hair tells you where it wants to go if you stop forcing it. I still mess it up sometimes but the difference is night and day. Anyone else have an older barber call out your technique like that?
