My client's dad gave me a haircut tip that flipped my whole approach
I was fading this kid's hair last Tuesday and his dad watches me for a minute then says 'you're fighting the hair, not working with it.' He was a retired barber from Chicago. Now I adjust my clipper angle before I even start cutting, and blends take half the time. Anyone else had a random stranger change how you work?

Did you ever get that feeling where someone says something so simple it just clicks? That old barber was spot on about fighting the hair... I had a similar thing happen with a chef at a diner once. I was struggling with these tough brisket slices and he just told me to let the knife do the work, not force it through. Changed how I handle all my knives at home now, not just the tough cuts. It's crazy how a random tip from a stranger can stick with you way more than any tutorial online.

That old barber knew what he was talking about for sure, @margaret_taylor42! I used to think you could muscle your way through any haircut but this totally flipped my mindset. Now I'm way more focused on flow than force.

That thing about letting the knife do the work is actually a pretty common cooking tip, not just from one chef. It's more about using a sharp blade and letting its weight carry through. The dad in the original post was talking about hair texture and growth patterns, not just applying more force. It's two different skills with the same idea behind them, but I think comparing them directly can cause confusion. The real trick is learning to read what the hair is telling you, not just relaxing your grip.
