I used a 1.5 guard on a guy's tight fade and it came out looking like a weird stripe.

I mean, maybe it's just me but I learned you really gotta check the hair's actual length against the guard number, not just go by what you think it'll do, anyone else have a better method for blending super short hair?

Honestly I used to just trust the guard numbers too, until I messed up a cut on my buddy. Now I always do a quick test spot with the clippers off, just pressing the guard into the hair to see how much it'll actually take off. The hair's thickness changes everything, a 1.5 on fine hair is way different than on thick coarse hair. That little check saves you from getting those weird lines.

Yeah, that's a solid tip from @olivia_harris19, wish I'd known it sooner.

Trusting those guard numbers is a quick way to make someone look like a cartoon character. Olivia's test spot method is the only thing that saves you from drawing a weird map on someone's head. Margaret304 is right to wish she knew it sooner, because fixing a stripe in a tight fade is a whole new problem. You basically have to erase your mistake and start over, which nobody enjoys. It turns a ten minute touch up into a half hour of careful repair work. That little press check feels silly but it beats the alternative every time.
