Hot take: I actually think fading with a 1 guard open is way cleaner than using a lever clipper
Honestly, after 4 years behind the chair I used to swear by my adjustable lever clipper for fades. But about 6 months ago I started messing around with just a fixed 1 guard on my Oster 76s and the blend comes out so much smoother. No accidental mid-fade adjustments messing up the gradient, no inconsistent pressure from the lever. I know everyone loves their Magic Clips for fading but I swear the 1 guard open gives me a sharper transition from skin to length. It takes me maybe 2 more minutes per cut but the result stays cleaner for the client another week. Anyone else ditch the lever and stick to fixed guards?

Don't you lose the taper at the bottom without the lever to close it down?

Wait, have you actually tried it without the lever though? I used to swear by that little lever for keeping the bottom tight, but honestly I had it backwards for years. My buddy showed me his setup and I thought he was crazy for not using it, but then I tried it myself and realized the bottom actually stays tapered fine once you get the fold right. The key is making sure the grind is even and you don't overstuff the basket, otherwise yeah it'll loosen up. Once I got that down I actually prefer it now since there's less cleanup and the shot flows way more consistently.
