Hot take: a 70 year old guy in my chair last week taught me more about clipper work than 4 hours of videos
He sat down and said his last barber in Austin used to run the clippers up the neck against the grain before going with it, and he wanted that same finish. I tried it on a whim, and the fade blended cleaner on the first pass than anything I've done in 6 months. Any of you old school folks run a reverse pass on the nape, or is that just asking for razor burn?
How short was he keeping that nape before he ran the reverse pass? I'm wondering if the trick is that you have to leave enough length for the against the grain pass to actually grab something, or if it works even on a skin fade. Also did he go up the whole neck or just that little V at the bottom? Every time I try going against the grain on the nape I get red bumps on guys with sensitive skin, so I'm curious if there was a guard or blade setup he was using to keep it from digging in.
