Thought I was too smart for my mechanic's tire pressure advice, guess who was wrong
Drove my 2012 Forester down to Richmond two weeks ago for a family thing. Before I left, my mechanic Bob told me to drop my front tires to 32 psi from the normal 35. I figured he was just being old school and ignored it. Halfway there, the car felt floaty and I nearly drifted into a guardrail on a curve. Pulled over at a gas station, checked the pressure, and sure enough it was at 38 from the summer heat. Dropped it to 32 and the ride settled right down. Has anyone else had a mechanic give weird advice that actually made driving safer?

That thing about Bob's advice dropping the front tires hit home. It reminds me of how people often overlook the small, boring advice from folks who've been doing something for decades. In my experience, those little tweaks are usually based on real world stuff they've seen go wrong a hundred times. Your mileage may vary, but I've found that when someone with grease under their nails gives a tip that sounds weird, it's worth trying before you write it off.

Nah I gotta push back on that a little. That kind of thinking is how you end up chasing ghosts and wasting time on old wives' tales from guys who never bothered to learn why something actually works. Bob might mean well but that doesn't mean his advice is good. I've seen plenty of old school mechanics swear up and down that you gotta do some weird ritual with a hammer and a prayer when the real fix is just reading the manual or checking the specs. Sometimes those tips are just something they picked up from their uncle who had a buddy who once saw it work on a random Tuesday. Blindly trying every weird tip because someone has dirty hands is how you end up with more problems than you started with.
