Spent $200 on a fancy hydrometer for homebrewing and it broke in 3 months

I bought the Tilt Bluetooth hydrometer from a shop in Portland last fall thinking it would make my brews perfect, but the plastic casing cracked just sitting in my fermenter after only 4 batches. No water damage or anything, it just gave out on me and now I'm back to using my $15 glass one from Amazon that works fine. Anyone else get burned by overpriced gear that didn't hold up?

and honestly @king.andrew youre probably right that its a luck thing but it still stings to drop that kind of cash and have it crap out so fast. i had a buddy who bought a fancy pH meter for cheesemaking and same deal, one of them was a dud and the other lasted years. makes you wonder if they just dont quality check each one the same.

you used to think differently but this changed your mind" - yeah honestly @king.andrew i was in the same boat before, i thought the tilt was overhyped crap after seeing a few posts about them failing. but a buddy let me borrow his for a few batches and i gotta admit i was wrong. it held up fine through a big ipa and a stout, no cracks or anything. still not spending $200 on one myself, but i see why people like them if they work right.

Not sure I agree with you on this one. I got a Tilt last year and it's been through maybe 15 batches with no issues at all. Plastic casing is still solid, no cracks, and the battery is still going strong after months of use. Maybe you just got a dud or something, it happens with any product. I know a few other homebrew guys who swear by theirs too, so this isn't exactly a common problem.
