Rant: I used to think a dirty air filter was fine until I saw the difference in my fuel bill

For years I figured a dirty air filter in my car was no big deal. I mean, it still ran, right? Then last month I finally swapped out the filter on my 2012 Honda Civic after like 15,000 miles. The old one was completely caked with dust and leaves, black as coal. My gas mileage jumped from 28 mpg to 34 mpg on the next two tanks. That's a solid 6 mpg improvement just from a $15 part I ignored for way too long. Now I'm checking it every oil change like a maniac. Has anyone else had that moment where a cheap fix made a huge difference you didn't expect?

@simon_coleman oh man, yes. My buddy Dave had an old Ford Focus that was getting terrible mileage, like barely 22 mpg on the highway. He swore up and down it was just how the car was. Finally I convinced him to let me look at the air filter and it was literally clogged with dog hair and leaves. He threw in a new one and his next tank showed 29 mpg. He felt so dumb for putting it off.

Man, that's exactly what happened to me with my old truck. I was getting like 14 mpg on a good day and just thought that was normal for an aging V8. Finally swapped the filter after a buddy gave me a hard time about it, and I shot up to almost 19 mpg. Felt like I was stealing gas. It's wild how such a little thing can sneak up on you. Now I'm the guy telling everyone to check theirs.
