My buddy swore I was wasting money on synthetic oil for my truck
He kept telling me conventional was fine and I was just throwing cash away. I stuck with synthetic for my 2008 F-150 anyway after a mechanic showed me sludge buildup in a similar engine. Two years later at 185k miles my engine still runs clean while his started knocking around 160k. Has anyone else seen actual proof that synthetic makes a difference long term?

Read an article from a fleet maintenance company that tracked 50 work trucks over 200k miles each. The ones on synthetic had way less carbon buildup and fewer oil-related repairs across the board. Your buddy's knocking engine is pretty solid proof on its own.

People do this with everything these days, not just oil. They cheap out on one thing and brag about it, then act surprised when their stuff craps out early. It's like buying the bargain brand tires for a truck you haul with, or using the cheapest gas because "gas is gas." That sludge buildup mechanic showed you is exactly the kind of thing you can't see until it's too late. Your buddy saved maybe fifty bucks a year on oil changes and now he's staring at a rebuild or a new truck. A little bit of prevention goes a long way, especially on stuff that works hard.
