I picked the local farmers market over the big grocery store for my weekly shopping and it's been a disaster

Started buying all my produce and meat from the market on Elm Street about 3 weeks ago. Thought I was being healthy and supporting local people. But yesterday I paid $7 for a head of lettuce that went bad in 2 days, and the eggs I bought had this weird taste. Has anyone else had a bad run with switching to small vendors instead of the big stores?

Heard a food reporter on the radio saying some small farm stands don't chill their eggs properly which changes the taste. She said it's actually pretty common with backyard chickens. That $7 lettuce thing is rough though, I got burned on some pricey tomatoes from a vendor on 5th street last month that were mushy the next day. Might be worth checking if the market has any rules about how long vendors can keep stuff out in the sun. Some of those tents don't have any shade at all.

Used to swear by farmers markets but that $7 lettuce story hits hard. This is definitely making me think twice about switching.
