Had a chat with my buddy who restores old typewriters and he said something that hit me hard

He told me that every single machine he takes apart has a story because of how people treated it over decades, and it made me realize my $30 keyboard I tossed last year could've been someone's whole career. Anyone else ever throw away a tool they later felt weird about?

My grandpa had this beat up old tape measure from his carpentry days that I found in his shed after he passed. It had duct tape wrapped around the middle, the hook was bent from years of use, and the numbers were practically rubbed off in one spot. I almost threw it in the trash because it looked so rough, you know? But I kept it because it felt wrong to toss something that had been in his hands for forty years, measuring everything from kitchen cabinets to birdhouses. That same feeling hit me when you talked about the typewriter guy it makes you wonder how many decent tools we just pitch without thinking about the person who maybe saved up for it. There's something about a beat-up tool that's been fixed over and over that feels more valuable than the shiny new one sitting on a store shelf.
