Dropped $60 on a fancy watch battery replacement, got scammed

I took my old Seiko into a shop downtown last month because the battery died. The guy told me it needed a special gasket and seal job, charged me $60. Got the watch back, worked for three days, then stopped. Took it to a different place and they said the first guy just swapped the battery and did nothing else. I could have done it myself for $5 and ten minutes. Has anyone else been ripped off by those jewelry store repair counters?

My cousin ran a watch repair shop for years and he told me most of those mall jewelry counters just hire whoever walks in off the street. He said a proper gasket and seal on a Seiko takes maybe 30 minutes and costs about $15 in parts if you use genuine stuff. The $60 is actually pretty standard for a shop rate even for simple battery swaps because they have to factor in the risk of cracking the case or losing a stem. Sounds like you just got unlucky with the first guy cutting corners.

Nah, $60 is cheap for a lesson in trusting your gut.
