Can we talk about the feedback that made me stop overwatering my succulents?

A lady at the local nursery told me I was basically drowning my plants after I complained about them turning yellow. She said 'your succulents need to suffer a little, that's when they look their best.' So I cut watering down to once every 3 weeks instead of every 5 days. Now my jade plant actually has that nice red edge on the leaves. Has anyone else gotten a piece of advice that went totally against what you thought you knew?

Three weeks still seems like a lot honestly. I water my succulents maybe once a month and they sit in a south window that bakes them all day. The key is really the soil and pot drainage more than the schedule. As long as the pot has a hole and the soil is gritty, you can usually get away with forgetting about them for a while.

Wait, are you just letting the soil dry out completely before watering?
