Appreciation post: My old method of trimming hedges by eye vs using a string line now

I used to just eyeball my hedge lines and hope for the best. Looked okay from the driveway but up close it was wavy. Then my neighbor Mike pointed out the dips after I finished last spring. Now I string a line between stakes before I even start cutting. Has anyone else made that switch and seen a big difference?

Ngl I actually got better results just eyeballing it. Tried the string thing once and ended up with a straighter line but it looked too rigid, like a robot trimmed my bushes. Now I just stand back, squint, and go for it.

I always set mine up, cut close to the line, then go back with hand shears and soften the edges by just a tiny bit so it still has a natural look but stays straight. It's like using training wheels - you use the string to fix the wavy issues, then take off the extra sharpness by hand so it doesn't scream "I was measured." That way you get the clean line without losing the organic feel that eyeballing gives you.
