My vet in Spokane called my dog's name 'a cry for help' and I'm starting to think she was right
I named my pug 'Sir Reginald Wrinklesworth III' about 3 years ago because I thought it was hilarious, and I defended it every time someone gave me a look. Last week my vet in Spokane, Dr. Chen, was calling him back for his shots and she just paused, looked at me, and said 'you know he only responds to Reggie, right?' I brushed it off until I counted it out that morning at the park and it took me 8 full seconds to say the whole name every single time. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I gave my dog a name that's basically a small speech, and I feel kind of bad about it. Has anyone else shortened a ridiculous pet name after realizing you were the only one actually saying all of it?
Laughing at the idea that this is some kind of crisis. Your dog does not care what you named him, he cares that you feed him and scratch his belly. Reggie knows his name is Reggie because that's the sound that gets him treats, and the fancy part was always for you and other humans, not him. Plenty of people give pets long silly names and then use a short one in daily life, that's normal and not a "cry for help" from anyone. The vet was making a joke, and honestly she probably sees ten dogs a day with weirder names than yours. You gave your pug a funny name you loved and you call him Reggie now, that is not a problem, that is just how pet names work.
