It took 4 years to realize I'd been yelling the wrong name at my cat

So I've got this orange tabby named Pickles. Adopted him in 2021, always called him Pickles, he never responded to it. I figured he was just aloof like most cats. Then last week I was watching TV and said 'Come here, Pico' without thinking, and the idiot comes running from the other room. Apparently the shelter had named him Pico de Gallo and I just assumed Pickles was short for it or whatever. Nope. His whole life here he's been Pico. I've been yelling 'PICKLES!' at a cat who thinks his name is Pico for 4 years. Has anyone else had a pet that secretly had a different name the whole time?

My cat's full name is a 47 character legal document

So my partner named our cat before I got a say, and the shelter paperwork lists her as 'Princess Consuela Banana Hammock, Esquire, Defender of the Sock Drawer'. That's 47 characters if you count the spaces. I tried calling her just 'Hammock' for a week and she ignored me completely. Yesterday at the vet, they yelled the full name out and I had to explain to three strangers why my cat has a law degree. Is it too late to rename her something normal like 'Mittens', or do I just lean into the absurdity? Has anyone else ended up with a pet name that's basically a joke gone too far?

Paid $80 to rename my beagle, still call her by the old name

I adopted a dog named Princess from a shelter, but that felt too fancy, so I dropped $80 on a formal training session to teach her "Bean." She only responds when I shout "Princess Bean," which defeats the whole purpose. Is dropping the old name entirely even possible, or do I just accept the compound title?

Named my cat 'Director' and now she acts like she owns the place

My sister dared me to name our new kitten Director after a joke about her bossy meowing. Six months later, I'm genuinely considering a name change because she'll stare at me during dinner until I move her food bowl to a different corner, and she's started blocking the hallway like she's planning a scene. On one hand, the name fits her personality so perfectly that strangers laugh when they hear it. On the other hand, I'm tired of explaining to the vet that no, I'm not being ironic, my cat just thinks she runs a production company. Does the name actually shape the pet's behavior, or do we just pick names that match what they already are? I'm curious if anyone else has a ridiculous name that accidentally became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Named my cat 'Mortgage' and now that silly vet bill hits different

I paid $140 for a name tag and collar that says Mortgage on it, and honestly it was worth every penny until my cat got a urinary blockage last month. The emergency vet charged me $900, and when the tech called out 'Mortgage, room 3', I about lost it. People in the waiting room stared, one guy asked if I was being foreclosed on. But the name fits him because he's a constant financial drain, he's chewed through three phone chargers and a pair of headphones since January. My buddy named his dog 'Student Loan' and now we have a running joke about who's bleeding more money. Still, I wouldn't change it, the vet techs remember him every time now. Has anyone else given their pet a financially themed name that backfired or paid off in a weird way?
