Why does nobody talk about how the Dawn of the Dead remake cut the whole point of the mall
I finally sat down last Saturday and rewatched the 2004 Dawn of the Dead with my brother, and about 40 minutes in it hit me that I had been defending this remake for almost 20 years without really thinking about why. The original spends half its runtime showing people shopping and eating and living in the mall like nothing is wrong, and that boredom is the whole message. The remake zips past all of that in maybe 6 minutes, then it just becomes a fast zombie chase movie with a baby at the end. I counted 4 scenes in the original that have no action at all and they are the scenes I remember most, and the remake has zero of those. My brother just looked at me and asked why they even set it in a mall if they were not going to use it. Has anyone else gone back to a remake they loved and realized the thing they loved was the part the director threw out?
