Total waste of time: that 'RoboCop' remake from 2014

I sat through the whole thing in a theater in Portland and walked out feeling ripped off. The original had that gritty satire about corporations running everything, but this one was just another generic action movie with shiny effects. They spent $100 million on it and forgot to include any of the dark humor or tension that made the first one work. Has anyone else tried rewatching the original after a bad remake and just gotten more angry about what they changed?

I finally watched the 2016 Ghostbusters remake last month during a night shift lull (slow ER nights, you know how it is). The cast worked hard and had good chemistry, but the whole thing felt like a cash grab pretending to be progressive. The problem is nobody asked for a remake when the original still holds up perfectly fine. Has anyone else found a remake that's technically decent but still completely unnecessary?

Hit 50 straight bad remakes before I finally gave up on Hollywood

I made it a personal goal to watch every big movie remake from the last 5 years. Last Tuesday I finally crossed 50 remakes on my list with the new RoboCop and it just broke me. That one was especially bad because they stripped out all the satire and made it a generic action flick. Has anyone else tried to power through a bunch of these just to see if there's a single good one hidden in there?

Stopped by a pawn shop and found the 1980s Flash Gordon on VHS

I was in Tucson last weekend killing time and spotted an old copy of the original Flash Gordon movie for $3. The remake from 2020 just didn't have that silly charm and the Queen soundtrack. Why do they keep remaking classics that already got the vibe right?

I was flipping through channels around 3 AM during my night shift break and caught that 2012 Total Recall remake. Within ten minutes I was yelling at the TV about how they removed the whole Mars plot (which was the whole point of the original, right?). My coworker asked what I was so mad about and I just pointed at Kate Beckinsale's character being a generic villain instead of the original's complex wife. Has anyone else noticed how these remakes strip out the weird creative bits that made the originals memorable?

I was at a bar in Austin last Friday and my friend Dave started arguing that the 2012 Total Recall remake was actually okay. He said it was more faithful to the Philip K. Dick story than the original Schwarzenegger version. I about spit out my beer. The original had that weird three-breasted lady and all the goofy action that made it fun. Why would anyone think we needed a serious version of that movie? The Fog remake from 2005 was a total train wreck

I watched the original 1980 version last week with my buddy. It was creepy, slow burn, just worked. Then we tried the 2005 remake with that guy from Smallville. Something was off immediately. The fog looked like digital smoke instead of that weird glowing stuff from the original. The acting felt rushed, no tension at all. We turned it off after 30 minutes. He spent the first 15 minutes laughing at the stop-motion ED-209 but by the end he was all in on how dark and funny it was. I was watching the original 1978 Dawn of the Dead the other night and it hit me - that remake from 2004 is basically a completely different movie with the same name. The original was slow and creepy, about consumerism and being stuck in a mall. The remake was just fast zombies and action scenes. Why call it Dawn of the Dead if you're gonna change the whole point? My buddy Tom argued it's better because it's more exciting but I said why not just make a new zombie movie then. Has anyone else felt like some remakes just borrow a title to get attention but don't actually respect what made the original work?

I finally watched the 2011 version of The Thing last night and I'm still mad about it lol. The original 1982 movie is one of my all time favorites so I had low expectations but dang. They spent all this money on practical effects and then covered them up with terrible CGI because test audiences thought the puppets looked fake. What was the point of remaking it if you're gonna ruin the one thing people loved about the first movie? Has anyone else felt let down by a remake that had the right ingredients but just messed it up?

I put the 2012 Total Recall on mute and played the original 1990 movie audio over top, synced up the big action beats, and it somehow fixed the lifeless feel for about 20 minutes before the timing drifted, has anyone else tried something like this for a flop remake?
