Watched the 1998 Psycho remake and the original back to back in one sitting in Denver
My buddy rented both from a video store off Colfax last month, so we did the 1960 one first and then the 1998 shot for shot version right after. About 40 minutes into the remake I realized the exact same script felt flat because the new cast was just copying moves instead of actually feeling anything, and Vince Vaughn as Norman was rough to sit through. Did a shot for shot remake ever work for anybody, or is that idea dead on arrival?
Ugh, the shot for shot thing bugs me so much because it takes away the one thing that made the original work, which is that Hitchcock was inventing the language as he went. Here's what I keep wondering though, when you watched them back to back, did the 1998 one ever accidentally work better in a scene you didn't expect? Like was there any single moment where the color or the newer camera stuff added something the black and white couldn't do? And did your buddy feel the same way or did he defend it?
