Tried the Total Recall remake from 2012. It's dull, but now my uncle won't stop reminiscing about the 90s version.

Actually, the 2012 version is a direct remake of the 1990 film, not just a new take on the story. They both adapt the same Philip K. Dick short story, but the newer one follows the movie's plot beats pretty closely, just with a different setting. It swaps Mars for a colony called The Colony and changes up the villain. The core story of a guy discovering his life is a fake is still the same structure. It just feels so much more bland and forgettable in how it tells it.

Well, the 2012 one isn't really a remake of the movie. It's more like a new take on the same story, but yeah, it's pretty bland compared to the 1990 original.
