TIL the 1998 Psycho remake used the same shot list as Hitchcock's, frame for frame
I looked it up after a coworker brought it up and the whole thing was a shot for shot copy, which made me wonder why anyone would pay to sit through a remake that adds nothing new, so what other remakes are basically just the original with a fresh coat of paint?
The 1998 version wasn't exactly frame for frame though. Gus Van Sant kept the same shot list and most of the same dialogue, but he added stuff like the masturbation scene and the weird cow in the window during the opening. The colors and camera tricks were different too, he was messing with the whole idea on purpose. It still came off as a pointless experiment to most people, but it wasn't a straight copy like everyone says. The classic one that actually is a near total copy is Vanilla Sky, which is almost the exact same movie as the Spanish film Open Your Eyes, same director and all, just in English with Tom Cruise.
