Rant: why do studios keep remaking movies nobody asked for?

I mean, I finally watched that new take on The Craft last weekend and it just made me mad. The original had this gritty 90s vibe that you can't copy, and the remake tried to make everything sleek and modern. It's like they looked at the wrong parts of the source material. Same thing happened with that Total Recall reboot from 2012, they stripped out all the weird Philip K. Dick stuff and just made it a generic action flick. Idk, maybe it's just me but when a remake changes the tone that much, what's the point of even calling it a remake? The old movies still exist and look fine, so it's not like we needed a new version. Has anyone else noticed this pattern where the remake takes the least interesting part of the original and builds the whole thing around it?

Notice the same thing with food lately, every chain keeps bringing back old menu items but strips out what made them weird and good, like they're scared of the original flavor. They just grab the name and the surface look, then sand off all the rough edges until it's safe and boring. It's the same shortcut mindset, trusting the brand to do the work instead of actually making something worth paying attention to.
