Question: my 1980s classic got a remake with a budget, why did they strip the plot?

I watched the new version of The Wicker Man for the first time last night and it completely missed the point of the original. They replaced the slow burn mystery with jump scares, and the ending made no sense compared to the 1973 version. Has anyone else found that remakes remove the subtext to appeal to a wider crowd, or am I just too attached to the old films?

Honestly, it kind of sounds like you went in expecting the old movie and got upset when it wasn't that. Remakes are their own thing, not a copy job. The 73 version is slow because it had to be, budgets were small and they stretched it out. The new one was always going to be louder and faster because that's what studios think sells tickets now. You're not wrong that the subtext is gone, but I'm not sure it was ever about the plot for the people who made it. They just wanted a recognizable name and a chance to do their own take. Maybe it's easier to just enjoy it as a separate movie and not compare every little thing.
