Can we talk about how the new Overboard remake forgot the whole point of the original?
I rewatched the 1987 Overboard last Friday and then sat through the 2018 one with my wife, and it hit me why the remake bugs me so much. The original worked because Goldie Hawn's character was actually rich and awful, so her fall from grace meant something. The new version made her a spoiled Mexican heiress and flipped the roles, which sounds fine on paper, but it stripped out the whole class clash that made the first one funny. Now it's just a guy lying to a woman with amnesia for 90 minutes and the movie never once acts like that's a problem. Does anyone else feel like remakes keep sanding off the rough edges that made the originals worth watching?
