Can we talk about how the new Flatliners remake killed everything that made the 1990 one work?
I watched the 1990 Flatliners on VHS probably 20 times as a kid, and the whole point was these med students messing with death because they were arrogant, not because they had some app or fancy gear. The 2017 remake swapped all that dread for jump scares and a glossy look, and it made $45 million on a $19 million budget, so nobody even showed up. The original made $61 million back in 1990 money, which tells you people cared about the story, not the effects. Why do studios keep doing this to 80s and 90s movies that already worked? Would love to hear which remake you think is the worst offender.
Total Recall remake in 2012 is my pick for worst. They took out the Mars stuff and the whole mutant storyline that made the original so weird and fun. Colin Farrell was fine but it felt like a generic action movie with no personality. The 1990 one had that cheesy magic that you just cant fake with better CGI.
