The old timer at the supply house in Fresno told me to stop guessing on dryer vents, and it cut my callback rate way down
I was picking up a blower wheel at the supply house in Fresno about 6 weeks ago and this old timer named Ray behind the counter watched me grab a generic 4 inch vent kit off the shelf. He said, "You're gonna be back here in 3 months buying the same part for the same house." I asked what he meant and he walked me through it. Most dryers I work on only push about 3 to 4 feet of real airflow, so a long run with elbows chokes them and burns up the blower. He said to check the whole vent path before I even touch the machine, every single time. I started doing it, and on my last 7 dryer calls, 5 of them had a crushed or clogged vent and the machine was fine. I used to just vacuum the lint trap area and call it a day. Now I charge a bit more for a vent cleanout and the callbacks have basically stopped. Any of you guys make vent checks part of your standard dryer call, or do you just fix what's in front of you?
Man, I gotta say I don't fully agree with charging extra for the vent cleanout. A clogged vent is a fire hazard and half the time that's the real reason the dryer is acting up in the first place, so cleaning it out is just doing the job right, not an add on you bill for. If I find a crushed or packed vent, I fix it because that's what the customer is paying me to figure out. I do check the whole run every time, no question there, Ray was right about that part. But tacking on a fee for something that's basic to the repair rubs me the wrong way. Just build it into your rate and move on.
