I used a cheater bar on the handle and the cast frame cracked right at the weld, so can anyone recommend a press that actually handles a 5 ton load without folding?

Found out my compressor gauge was lying to me for 6 months

Went to a call last week for a fridge not cooling in a rental unit outside Tacoma. Checked my manifold, saw 45 psi on the low side, thought it was a bad start relay. Replaced it and left. Tenant called back two days later, same problem. On the second trip I used the tenant's cheap gauge I had in the van and it read 55 psi. Turns out my main gauge was off by 10 psi the whole time. The compressor was starving for refrigerant and I may have caused extra wear by running it low for months. Has anyone else had a gauge drift without them noticing until a second opinion? How often do you guys recalibrate or send yours out for a check?

Who else didn't know fridges have a condenser fan that can run backwards?

I found this out last week while working on a 15 year old Whirlpool that was barely cooling but the compressor was running fine. The customer said they heard a weird buzzing, so I pulled the back panel and the condenser fan motor was spinning, but in the wrong direction. Apparently some of those universal replacement motors they sell at the parts house have a wire pair you can swap to change rotation, and the old timer who installed it years ago never checked. I did some digging online and found a service bulletin about it, which honestly blew my mind because I've replaced that motor maybe 40 times and never once thought about direction. Now I'm second guessing every fan motor I've ever installed, has anyone else run into this or am I just lucky?

Visited the county dump and saw 5 working dryers in one pile

Stopped at the transfer station outside Boise last Saturday to drop off some scrap copper and my jaw dropped. Someone had tossed five dryers that looked like they just needed a $15 thermal fuse or maybe a belt. I pulled one over, popped the panel, and sure enough the drum rollers were shot, 20 bucks in parts and it would run another 5 years. Made me think about how many customers just buy new instead of calling us, this machine probably cost $600 new and they threw it away over a squeak. I grabbed the model numbers off all five and looked them up in my truck, three had parts available under $40 total. Does anyone else troll the dump for repairable units, or am I just turning into a scavenger?

Bought a $70 capacitor tester and it sat in my truck for 2 months, now I use it on every call

I kept swapping parts on a fridge that would run for 3 days then cut out, turned out the compressor start cap was reading fine on my old analog meter but dropping voltage under load. The new Fluke tester caught it in 10 seconds, I felt like an idiot for all the time I burned diagnosing the wrong thing. That unit cost me a return trip plus the part, probably $150 in lost time and gas just because I trusted a cheap meter reading. Before this I figured any cap that shows capacitance is good, but that's not how weak caps behave when they're hot. Now I pull the tester out on every compressor call, even if the cap looks perfect. Back in April I replaced a 1998 GE dryer that had outlived three families in my rental duplex on Fletcher Street. The drum bearings were screaming but it still dried a load in 45 minutes flat. I went with a new Samsung because the tenant wanted matching units. Three service calls later, the moisture sensor reads wrong every other cycle and the lint filter pops out mid-run. My old standby never once gave me a false dry signal. I get that tech improves things, but for dryers I think brushed steel and a timer knob beat a digital panel any day. Last month I had a job in Austin where the homeowner wanted me to put in a used control board from eBay to save $180. I told him I only install factory parts because I've seen too many aftermarket boards burn out compressors. He pushed back and said I was just padding the bill. I held my ground, he paid the $410 for the OEM part, and the unit ran fine. Two weeks later his neighbor called me for the same model, his cheap board from the same seller fried the fan motor. Has anyone else drawn this line and lost a customer over it, or am I just being stubborn?

Did a house call in Toledo last Tuesday where the customer said their dryer was taking forever and tripping the thermal cutoff. Pulled the vent line off the wall and it was packed solid with lint, probably 6 years of buildup. After I ran the brush kit through it and vacuumed everything out, the next cycle finished in 25 minutes flat. My dolly straps used to be a tangled nightmare, now they live in a bucket

For years I carried four ratchet straps loose in my van and every single call I wasted 10 minutes untangling them on the driveway. Last month in Akron I got so fed up I bought a cheap 5 gallon bucket and drilled 4 holes through the side near the bottom. I had a call last Tuesday in Columbus for a Whirlpool fridge that stopped cooling. The compressor was shot but it's an old model. I had to pick between dropping in a used compressor for $180 or a new one for $350. I went with the used one to save the customer money.
