Stumbled on a stat about compressor failure rates that surprised me
I was reading through some old service bulletins from Copeland last week and found out that over 60% of compressor failures in residential refrigerators are actually caused by liquid slugging, not electrical issues. I always assumed it was voltage problems or just age. That got me thinking about how often we overlook the simple stuff like proper refrigerant charge. Has anyone else noticed a big gap between what we assume fails and what actually fails in the field?

Didn't I read somewhere that something like 80% of all compressor issues trace back to system cleanliness and installation mistakes rather than the compressor itself going bad? That stat on liquid slugging makes total sense though, I've heard old timers say a flooded start will kill a compressor faster than almost anything.

80% sounds about right based on what I've seen. It's kind of like how people blame the furnace or AC unit itself when half the time it's just dirty filters or bad ductwork. Same pattern everywhere you look - car problems blamed on the engine when it's a clogged fuel filter or bad spark plugs. People always want to pin it on the most expensive part instead of the simple stuff that actually breaks first.
