Had to pick between a $300 multimeter upgrade or a new vacuum pump for my truck... went with the pump and it saved a whole job yesterday.

Yeah, @daniel593 nailed it with that woodshop analogy. I used to grab the shiniest new tool first, but watching a buddy burn cash on a lathe before he even picked a project made me realize you gotta know what you're building before you buy the gear.

So what changed your mind? Was it seeing a specific project fail because the wrong tools were picked before the goal was clear? Like someone buying all the fancy woodworking gear before even knowing if they want to build a table or a bookshelf.
