Had a Samsung fridge compressor die at 13 months - just out of warranty by 30 days

Customer called me in a panic last Tuesday in Portland. Fridge stopped cooling overnight, freezer was fine. Pulled the back panel and sure enough, the compressor was hot enough to fry an egg. Samsung warranty is 12 months on parts. They wanted $650 for a new compressor plus labor. Told the guy he'd be better off buying a different brand. Has anyone else noticed these Samsung compressors failing right after the warranty window? What do you tell customers when they're looking at a $700+ repair on a fridge that's barely a year old?

Actually, Samsung's warranty on their refrigerators is 12 months on parts and labor, not just parts. But the real kicker is that they have a 5 year sealed system parts warranty that covers the compressor itself. The problem is that warranty only covers the part, not the labor or any other materials. So you still end up paying out of pocket for the install work. I tell customers to call Samsung directly and ask for a goodwill adjustment since they're only 30 days past the first year. I've seen them cover parts and sometimes even partial labor in those situations. It's definitely not a guarantee but it's worth a shot before spending $700 on a different brand.

Yeah, that's rough. I usually tell people to just go with a Whirlpool or GE instead if they can swing it - those compressors are way more reliable long term.

That 30 day window is brutal. I've seen two Samsung fridges do the exact same thing in my own circle of friends, both died right around the 14 month mark. Do you think Samsung is deliberately using cheaper compressors now to push people into buying a new fridge, or is it just bad luck with the manufacturing run?
