Didn't believe in surge protectors for fridges until last Tuesday

Always figured a fridge compressor could handle a power bump, then a customer's unit died after a storm hit their block. Found the board fried clean through, $350 repair. Now I tell everyone to slap a $25 surge protector on it, you guys agree that's worth it?

Bought one for my mom's fridge last week after watching a video of a house fire starting that way.

Watched the same type of video and it scared me straight. My aunt actually had a fridge that started making weird noises and we just ignored it. Then one day the compressor just gave out and sparked a little. Nothing caught fire luckily but we smelled that horrible burning plastic smell for days. Now I check every fridge in my family like a crazy person making sure all the coils are clean and the plugs aren't loose or damaged. Better safe than sorry with these things.

Man, I didn't think about surge protectors for fridges either until my buddy lost his whole freezer full of venison to a power flicker. Felt dumb after that. @the_rose you're not alone, I became that obsessive relative too, I'm the guy now cleaning coils at family gatherings like a weirdo.
