The dub rewatch group on Discord flipped my take on sub-only elitism

For like 8 years I was that guy who would only watch subs, thought dubs were for people who couldn't read, all that nonsense. Then last month a buddy dragged me into this small rewatch group on Discord for an older show, and they were doing the dub version on purpose. I sat in just to complain but around episode 4 something clicked. Hearing the localization choices made me notice how much of the original humor was being translated as almost a different script, and it was actually clever. Now I'm going back through stuff I already watched and giving the dubs a shot. It's not better, it's just a different version of the show, like a cover song. Has anyone else changed sides on this after a group watch, or am I just late to the party?

and honestly the cover song comparison is perfect, that's exactly what it feels like once you get past the whole "original is sacred" thing. i mean, some dubs totally miss the mark but when they nail it it's like hearing the joke from a different friend who tells it their own way.
