That time I ruined a group watch by arguing about sub vs dub

So I was hosting a Death Note watch party at my place about 3 months ago, right around episode 15. One of my buddies kept making comments about the dub being 'the real way to watch it' and I just snapped. I went on a whole rant about how the original Japanese voice acting carries way more emotion and how the dub changes character meanings. Turned into a 20 minute argument that killed all the hype. The thing is, only 2 people there agreed with me, and the rest felt super awkward. Eventually I just apologized, put the dub on for the next episode, and kept my mouth shut. Everyone relaxed after that but the vibe was already weird. Has anyone else had a group viewing fall apart over a stupid debate like this?

The REAL issue here isn't sub vs dub at all. Nobody talks about how having ONE person playing host makes the whole thing feel like a performance. You're the one who picked the show, set the time, bought the snacks, and now you feel like you gotta defend your choices when someone criticizes it. That pressure is REAL. Next time you host, try telling people upfront that you're watching the version you like and if they want to complain they can host the next one. It keeps the fight from ever starting.

PREACH. You hit it with "hosting makes it feel like a performance" because that's EXACTLY what happened when I brought a friend over to watch Evangelion. I bought the whole box set, made popcorn, and within 10 minutes she started complaining about the English voice actor for Shinji being annoying. I took it so personally because I picked that show out for US to enjoy together. Suddenly I'm defending my whole taste in anime like it's a court case. It's like people don't get that the host is doing THEM a favor by setting everything up, not looking for criticism on their choices. Honestly after that I just started telling people "this is what I'm watching, mute it if you hate it" and it works way better.
