Ran into a guy at a con who changed how I watch dubs

I was waiting in line at Anime Expo last summer and this dude next to me started talking about how he watches every show three times - once subbed, once dubbed, once with no sound to focus on the animation. Said it made him notice things like background character reactions that tell the whole story. Has anyone else tried something like that or am I overthinking it?

Wait, has anyone else actually done the no-sound rewatch thing? I tried it last month with a show I thought I knew well and suddenly noticed the way background characters flinched during a big argument scene, it completely changed how I saw the whole episode. Now I'm hooked, I do it with every new series I start, just pick one random episode to watch silent and I always catch something.

Honestly this feels like overthinking it to me. A show is meant to be watched with sound and dialogue as part of the package, right? Like taking a burger and eating just the bun, then just the patty, then just the lettuce - you're missing how they work together. That flinch in the background you noticed? It only matters because of what's being said in the argument, without that context it's just a random arm movement. Spending three whole viewings on one series seems like a lot of time when you could be watching three different shows instead.
