Question about how Anime pacing changed between the 90s and today

I started rewatching Trigun from 1998 last night and noticed each episode actually moves the story forward with no filler. Compared to a modern show like My Hero Academia where they stretched one fight across 4 episodes, the difference is wild. Has anyone else felt like the shift to seasonal 12-episode formats actually made pacing worse somehow?
