My friend told me to skip the first 10 episodes of a show and it ruined the whole thing

Honestly, a buddy of mine kept saying I should just start One Piece from the Arlong Park arc, around episode 31, because the start was too slow. He said the real story didn't begin until then. So I listened and jumped right in. Ngl, I was totally lost on who anyone was or why I should care about Nami's deal. The big emotional moments fell completely flat because I had zero connection to the crew. I tried to go back and watch the early stuff, but knowing major plot points already made it feel pointless. It took me three months to even try getting into it again the right way, from episode one. Has anyone else had a show totally messed up by bad skipping advice?

Skipping the start kills the character growth.

Ugh, that's the worst. Reminds me of when my cousin said to skip the first season of Parks and Rec. I did, and then I couldn't figure out why Leslie was so awkward or why anyone put up with Tom. The jokes about Jerry missing the hole-in-one made no sense. I had to rewatch it all from the start to actually get the humor.

See this everywhere with people trying to skip the boring parts of life too.
