Had a weird chat with my cousin about dubbing vs subtitles

My cousin Marco, who only watches dubbed anime, told me last week that subbed anime is 'ruining the experience' because you miss the action while reading. It got me thinking because I've always sworn by subtitles since I started watching Attack on Titan back in 2014. But he made a point about how fast dialogue in shows like One Piece can pull you out of the fight scenes. Has anyone else had a conversation that made you question your own viewing habits?

you know what gets me though... everyone talks about missing action with subs but nobody mentions how dubbing changes the whole rhythm of the show, like characters will keep talking when there's clearly supposed to be a dramatic pause.

Is it really that big of a deal though?
