Dubs vs subs for comedy is a hill I'll die on but maybe I'm the wrong one

I've been watching anime since 2006 and I swear the dub of Gintama in season 3 lands every joke while the sub version misses like 40% of the puns, but my buddy in Chicago says I'm crazy and that the original voice actors are untouchable, so which side actually gets the humor better or is it just about who watched it first?

Whoa, hold on. Are you saying the actual jokes are different, or just that the delivery hits harder in the dub? Like, with Gintama, half the humor is the voice actors going off-script and adding local flavor. I gotta ask, does your buddy actually understand Japanese, or is he just going off the “subs are always better” rule? Because if he can't catch the puns in the original, he's basically just reading a translated script and guessing at the timing. My thing is, if you laughed out loud at the dub and only chuckled at the sub, that's not about first watch, that's about the dub writers doing their job right.
