Dubbed my entire watchlist wrong for 2 seasons, a lighting change gave it away

I binged 32 episodes of a mecha show with the subtitles on but the audio in Japanese, thought the main pilot was a guy the whole time. Then episode 33 had a scene where the cockpit light hit them clearly and my brain finally registered the voice was a woman's, and I replayed every conversation with a new context. Has anyone else had a single visual cue flip their whole read on a character that late in a series?

That whole "cockpit light hit them clearly" thing reminded me of my buddy Dave. He had the exact same problem, but it went on for like three full seasons of a show. He kept telling me how much he liked the gruff older captain character. Then one day he texted me all caps "SHE'S A WOMAN." Apparently there was this one shot where the character took off a helmet and the light hit their face just right. He rewatched everything after that and said all these little voice cues he'd written off as "just a deep voice" suddenly made sense. I still give him crap about it every time a new season drops.
