Digitization killed my favorite anime clip, check your sources

I found out yesterday that a scene I have loved for years, the fight from episode 17 of a 90s mecha show, only exists in my head now. The DVD I had was a bootleg from a swap meet in Fresno and the file I saved off a fan site back in 2006 is corrupted. I googled around and every streaming version has the remastered audio which completely changes the vibe. The old broadcast version had this weird echo noise during the big punch and it made the whole thing feel raw. Turns out the original tapes were lost in a studio fire in 2001 and nobody bothered to archive the TV cut. Has anyone else lost a beloved scene to time and had to settle for the cleaned up version? I feel like I am grieving a piece of mecha history that nobody else remembers.

Keep hunting the old fan forums, someone always saved the raw file on a dead hard drive.
