Appreciation post: That moment my anime watch party fell apart and I learned the hard way about streaming rights
I was hosting a group watch for Attack on Titan season 4 part 2 last month at my place in Austin. Everyone showed up with snacks ready to go. Then I hit play and that Crunchyroll error popped up saying the episode wasn't available in our region. I spent 20 minutes trying different links while 6 people sat on my couch staring at me. Finally I just gave up and we watched some old dub clips on YouTube instead. It was a total disaster. Has anyone else dealt with a streaming service just straight up blocking something at the worst possible time?

Disaster" is putting it lightly, that sounds like a full on nightmare lol. Reminds me of the time I tried to host a My Hero Academia movie night and forgot that only certain services have the rights to the dubs. Ended up with 5 people watching me frantically search "my hero movie free no virus" on my laptop like a total clown. Lesson learned, now I just send everyone a link to the high seas site beforehand and call it a day. Saves me from looking like a fool in front of my friends at least.

Yep, everything's about who has the rights now instead of just watching something.

My buddy tried to do a Studio Ghibli marathon last month and spent 45 minutes explaining to everyone why we could only watch Spirited Away on HBO Max but had to switch to Netflix for My Neighbor Totoro and then rent The Wind Rises on Amazon for like 4 bucks. Really kills the vibe when you're in the middle of a movie night and someone has to dig through three different apps while the pizza gets cold. Now we just keep a shared Google Doc with links to the old dvd rips we've all downloaded over the years.
