I finally sourced reclaimed wood for my coffee table, but now I'm debating its use

I'm building a coffee table and found some beautiful reclaimed barn wood. Some woodworkers swear by its character, while others warn about hidden defects and extra prep time. Should I embrace the imperfections or play it safe with new lumber?

Built a bookshelf from salvaged floorboards last year. Spent hours pulling nails and sanding, but the grain patterns were unmatched. Yeah, it was extra work, but the unique history made it worth it for me. Just check for major cracks or rot before committing.

What specific defects are you most worried about encountering, like old nails or severe warping? Understanding the actual condition of your barn wood batch is crucial, since "reclaimed" can mean anything from lightly weathered to full of surprises. That assessment will really dictate your prep time and final decision.

Eh, those nails build character... or a trip to the ER.
