Hot take: That guided street food tour in Bangkok led me to a phenomenal pad thai stall, but now I'm debating the value of local insight.
Last weekend, my tour guide steered us to a family-run pad thai cart that completely blew my mind. This small win made the whole tour worth it for me. However, I've heard arguments that these tours just herd tourists to pre-arranged spots, while others swear by the local knowledge you pay for. What's your experience with guided tours versus just wandering? Let's settle this.

I always avoided tours assuming they were tourist traps, but a similar experience in Chiang Mai totally shifted my perspective. @thea388 has a point about combining both methods for the best finds.

Mixing a tour with solo wandering works best for me every time.

Totally used to be in the same camp, thinking all tours were just herding people to overpriced spots. Had my mind blown on a hiking tour in Iceland though, stuff I would have never found on my own. Now I get the hybrid method, like you book a day trip for the tricky logistics or local knowledge. Then you bounce and explore the area on your own time with way better context. It just gives you the best of both worlds without the locked-in feeling.
