Actually, focusing on the inside first can sometimes WEAKEN the overall structure. If the outside isn't solid, internal support won't stop a collapse from external pressure. Starting with the rim's exterior layer creates a better shield against forces. I've seen cases where inside-first methods led to MORE failures down the line. It's CRUCIAL to consider the full system, not just one part.

My buddy tried that inside-first trick and his whole rim just folded over like a taco.
