My first teacher insisted on feeling the gather's weight without scales.

Now I rely on numbers, but that hands-on sense never really leaves you.

Back in his diner days, my friend had to eyeball coffee portions for the big urn. His boss would make him scoop grounds by hand until the weight felt right in the palm. Now he uses measured scoops for every pot, following a strict chart. But he'll still sometimes pause and bounce a handful of beans, checking some old memory in his fingers. Says it's like a ghost habit his hands won't drop.

Ghost habits from old jobs are the worst, aren't they? Your friend's hand remembering the coffee weight is a perfect example. Makes you wonder what other routines our bodies cling to without us even knowing.

Calling it a 'ghost habit' seems a bit much... it's probably just muscle memory from doing it for so long. @the_jesse, does your friend really think it's that serious, or is he just being nostalgic?
