At a gallery opening, someone called my bowl a 'fancy ashtray', should I correct them or let it slide?

On one hand it's rude to assume, on the other maybe they just don't know glass art, what do you think?

Remember my friend who makes those wild ceramic sculptures? Someone at a show called his favorite piece a 'really nice planter'. He just laughed and said, 'Thanks, but it's actually a sculpture about sound waves, want me to tell you about it?' The guy got super interested and ended up buying a smaller piece. Sometimes people just don't know what they're looking at, and a gentle correction can turn an awkward moment into a good chat. I'd say say something, but keep it light, not like you're scolding them.

Wait, did your friend already have that sound waves explanation ready or did he come up with it on the spot for that guy?

Yeah I just say "it's meant to be a sculpture, but I can see why you'd think vase." Makes it about their view, not their mistake. Works every time.
