Showerthought: My boss's need for office small talk kills our actual work flow

My Gen X manager schedules mandatory coffee breaks to 'build culture', but it just eats into my focused time. I'm a millennial who thrives on deep work blocks, and these interruptions wreck my productivity. Meanwhile, my Gen Z intern gets all her tasks done remotely without the chit-chat. This clash over what work looks like is costing us real output.

Deep work blocks" is the real goal, like the_olivia said.

Forced fun isn't culture. You said it with 'deep work blocks'. That's the real thing. Your boss is stuck on old office rules. Forced chat kills the focus you need to actually do good work. It just makes people resent the breaks.

Forced fun" is such a depressing phrase it almost makes me laugh. The idea that a manager thinks you can schedule genuine human connection like a team meeting is wild. It completely misses the point and just creates another chore. No wonder people hide in the bathroom or suddenly have very important phone calls to make.
