Question about hitting 30 and still renting

Honestly, I just turned 30 and my dad called to ask when I'm buying a house. For him, that was the milestone. For me and my friends, renting in Chicago gives us flexibility and we'd rather save for travel. Is owning a home still the universal sign of being an adult, or is that a boomer thing now?

How is owning a house the only adult card to punch? My dad gave me the same speech, and I just bought a new chainsaw instead. Flexibility and travel sound way more grown-up to me than being stuck with a leaky roof.

Home ownership is a weird flex when you realize it's just a giant savings account you can't touch without selling. At least a chainsaw can clear your own path instead of tying you to one spot. Maybe being an adult is just having the right tools for the life you want.

My version of adulting was buying a fancy coffee maker. Still renting, but at least my roof doesn't leak caffeine.
