My dad called my phone a 'distraction box' and it made me think

Honestly, I was showing him a video on my phone at dinner last week and he just shook his head. He said, 'You kids treat that thing like it's part of your body, it's just a distraction box.' I used to check it constantly, maybe 50 times a day without even thinking. After he said that, I tried leaving it in another room for the first hour after I get home. Tbh, it's been three weeks and I actually talk to my roommates more now. Has anyone else had an older relative point out a tech habit that you didn't even see?

My grandpa used to call my phone a leash, which hit hard. I started charging it outside my bedroom at night, and my sleep got way better. @leej52 is right about it being a tool, but you have to set the rules for it.

My mom calls it my third hand, so I started a no-phone zone at the dinner table.

That's a good point about the phone, but I don't think it's just a "distraction box." It's also my camera, my map, and how I listen to music. The real trick is learning to use it as a tool and not let it use you, which it sounds like you're figuring out. My grandma calls it my "little brain," which is maybe more accurate lol.
