My cousin's kid called my favorite band 'dad rock' at a family BBQ

We were at my aunt's place in Phoenix last summer and I had my old iPod playing some early 2000s pop punk. My 16 year old cousin Zoe looked over and said, 'Oh, you're listening to dad rock? That's kinda cool.' I was 28. It was a weird mix of feeling ancient and also laughing because she wasn't even trying to be mean. Has anyone else gotten a totally casual age check from a Gen Z family member like that?

Oh man, my friend Mike had a similar thing happen. His teenage niece saw his old Linkin Park t-shirt and asked if he was into "vintage band merch." He said it made him feel like a museum exhibit, but he also thought it was pretty funny.

Honestly, the funniest part is that pop punk from our teen years is now classic rock to them. Time is a flat circle.

I heard a classic rock station play Blink-182's "All The Small Things" last week, @phoenix970. It felt like a glitch in the matrix. Now we have kids discovering Green Day's "American Idiot" the same way we found Led Zeppelin. The cycle is real. Soon they'll be calling My Chemical Romance classic emo or something.
